Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 387

Kung Fu – Part 11

In the end we need to ask ourselves why we want to learn Kung Fu or martial arts. Is it for self- defence or for competition?

If it is for self-defence then we should be able to use it when we get older, even in our 60’s, 70’s or 80’, and not just for when we are young. If this is what we want, then we should learn martial arts which we are able to use when we are older, and this means that the skill should use less energy. For this, Wing Chun is definitely one of the best.

If we want to win competitions then we need to train in a different way, the competition way which this is not the traditional Chinese Kung Fu way. It is the same as if you want to run competitively. The training is not just normal running, you need to train especially for it and also accept that it will cause some damages and you will be injured. This mentality is very different from running for fun and for health. As martial artist, it does not matter if we are champions and have won so many competitions, if a child is stood in front of you holding a gun you still need to surrender or risk being severely injured or even killed. So, martial arts at the end, is about ourselves and what we want. For me, Kung Fu is for self-defence, good health, good philosophy, and to make my life better and more enjoyable.
