Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 393

Three Forms – Part 3

One leg Síu Lihm Tào 小念頭

The first form is Síu Lihm Tào 小念頭. This teaches us how to develop Gūng Lihk 功力 – Internal Strength, Faat Gihng 發勁 – Releasing Power and basic techniques. The most important part is the first part Gūng Lihk. In all of Wing Chun Gūng Lihk is the most important part as this is what helps us handle a stronger opponent, otherwise, it is like a child fighting an adult. A child cannot handle an adult until they have some strength. The child must at least have the strength to defend against some sort of attack. When they have learnt Chī Sáu, some techniques and how to Faat Gihng, then they can handle someone stronger than them. In the end, the child might be able to defeat a normal adult or even one who is stronger than normal.

The second part of Síu Lihm Tào is Faat Gihng and it teaches us how to use power at a short range. It is called Chèunhg Kìuh Faat Ging 長橋發勁 – Long Bridge Releasing Power. This allows us to attack very quickly because we do not need to withdraw our fists, but instead, we can hit directly from wherever the hand is. This saves a great deal of time and often we can hit before the opponent can hit us and we can attack continuously, one after another.
