Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note #194

My Sīfú Ip Chun 師父葉準

Master Tse and Grandmaster Ip Chun

I have been studying and practicing with Wing Chun over 40 years, from the beginning when I did not understand Wing Chun, to confusion and finally understanding. It takes a long time but there is one very important thing that we need to get it right and to reach a high level and that is to have a good teacher. I thank my Sīfú 師父, Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準, he has given me a very clear direction and examples of follow. He is small, about 5’2″ (158.5cm) yet he can Chī Sáu 黐手with people who are much bigger and stronger than him and even though they are bigger and stronger they still cannot hit him, but instead get hit by him. I remember when I was 24, watching him Chī Sáu with his students in Hong Kong and then later coming along with him to seminars in the West and in particular UK. He Chi Sau with many westerners who are all much taller and stronger than him. He applied the Wing Chun skill to Chī Sáu and no one could get close to him. This made everybody respect him so much and I was very impressed, even more than I already was.

During the 1980s and 1990s there were no movies about Ip Man and so my Sīfú used the correct skill to impress the world with Wing Chun. He openly taught his students and grand students and answered all their questions, whatever the question was about Wing Chun. This gave me the way to follow. To study Wing Chun you need to be clear and you need answers to all your questions and problems, then your Wing Chun can reach a high level.
