Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note 269

Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 Seminar Part 9

Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 pushes his stronger opponent

Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 got up from his chair and called for Tom to come up. He then told Tom to hold his Tāan Sáu 攤手 out and Grandmaster Ip Chun brought out his hand and contacted so they contacted each other at the wrist. Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 then asked, “Who is older? Who is stronger?” Everybody laughed because they all knew the answer, it was so obvious. Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 was older, old enough to be Tom’s great, grandfather, and obviously Tom was stronger. Grandmaster Ip Chun then said, “If I try to push you with my wrist, what do you think will happen?” So Grandmaster, using his Faat Sáu 拂手, tried to push Tom with his wrist. Since Tom was much bigger and stronger, Grandmaster Ip Chun could not push him. Grandmaster then changed his position and contacted Tom higher up on his forearm, closer to his elbow. Then he said to Tom, “Hold on!” He then pushed and Tom fell back a few steps! It was amazing” Grandmaster Ip Chun said, “Closer to the elbow is stronger, like first or second gear in car. It is strong, but not flexible. If I use my wrist, this is more flexible and faster, but it is not very strong, so we need to know which area to contact and how to use it when we Chī Sáu. Then you will have an advantage.”
