Master Tse’s Wing Chun Notes #78

Mark the Centre 拿中線

Note 78_2After we have formed the perfect Yee Zi Kim Yueng Ma 二字鉗羊馬 we need to maintain that position. Wing Chun training requires a lot of feeling and so we must feel that position and know if we have got it wrong, e.g. the feet too wide or narrow. We should be able to feel this immediately and correct it. This perfect stance we need to keep forever. The next thing we do is mark the centreline.

We cross both arms low down in front of us, keeping them straight. Usually we have the left hand over the right, but it is not wrong to have the right over the left. We then lift up both hands, keeping them crossed, in front of our chest, again the left hand inside and the right hand out, but again it is not wrong to do it the other way around.

In the past Wing Chun students would place a stick vertically in the ground in front of them and then cross their arms to mark the bottom and the top of the stick. Then every movement, such as a punch沖拳, Taan Sau攤手, Fuk Sau 伏手, Wu Sau護手 would match the centre created by the stick. It is very important to know the centre of our opponent as every punch or palm strike must attack their centre of gravity making it a very powerful attack and if the punching is continuous, then it is very powerful.
