Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 314

Kwán Sáu 綑手 and Gāan Sáu 挌手 pt3

Wing Chun Wooden Dummy
Train the Kwán Sáu to come from the whole body

In the Muhk Yàhn Jōng 木人樁 – Wooden Dummy we have three basic techniques. They are Kwán Sáu 綑手, Gāan Sáu 挌手 and Hyūn Sáu 圈手.  All three of these hands use energy, Faat Gihng 發勁 and Jyún Máh 轉馬. We must always remember training is different to real fighting. Wooden Dummy s used to train position, Faat Gihng and techniques. In these three hands we hit the Dummy quite hard, but we must have very precise positions and the movements must come from the whole body. The footwork leads the technique and so Jyún Máh is very important.  Do not be confused by drilling Kwán Sáu on the Wooden Dummy and the proper way to apply it – Kwán Sáu is soft. When we practise Kwán Sáu without a Wooden Dummy we must practise it together with Jyún Máh a this trains the Kwán Sáu to come from the whole body, however in Chī Sáu 黐手 or real fighting the Kwán Sáu is often just the hand movements and no movement from the feet at all. The reason for this is, when our opponent grabs and punches at us we do not have time for Jyún Máh or any other footwork and we must respond as quickly and we do not want to give our opponent any energy that they could then use against us, and so we just use Kwán Sáu with a good position.
