Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 320

First Section of Síu Lihm Tào 小念頭 Pt 5

Once we Have opened our stance, when doing Siu Lim Tao 小念頭, we do not move it until we have finished the form. The main part of Siu Lim Tao is the first section, where we hold our position, relax, empty our mind and then just move those basic hands. When teaching, students often ask me about the breathing during the form. We only need to focus on the movements and relax the body. When we are relaxed enough, our breathing will just follow along naturally.  Actually breathing is most important and we should let it happen naturally rather than thinking about it too much or trying to force it. The highest level, is always the most natural. Once we are in the correct position we must relax, in particular we must relax our shoulders, and then we will breathe naturally. Sometimes we will breathe in, sometimes we will breathe out, sometimes we will breathe heavily and deeply, sometimes we will breathe gently and sometimes we will even stop breathing for a short while. All of these are correct so along as we are relaxed and in a good position. So, do not worry about breathing, just breathe naturally.
