Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 333

24 Leg Techniques – Part 1

Grandmaster Tse training the one leg stance

When we study Wing Chun, most of its will concentrate on our hands. However, this is not right, we should first concentrate on our legs, though this does not mean thinking about kicking.

To begin with we should think about our stance and footwork. Good stances will bring up good Gung Lihk 功力and good footwork or help us develop an effective attack and defence. Of course we will certainly learn the hand techniques, like Tāan Sáu 攤手,Bóng Sáu 膀手, Fuhk Sáu 伏手, Wuh Sáu 護手, etc. In Wing Chun there are more than 50 hand techniques and each hand technique can have 1 to 15 different ways and combinations with other hands. So all together we can have over 200 hand techniques, and this is a lot! We will learn them along the way when we develop our Wing Chun skill. At the end we may even create our own combinations of hand techniques and we might modify some of the existing hands. For example like Bóng Sáu, I have created the Chèunhg Bóng Sáu 長膀手- Long  Bóng Sáu, and my Sīfú師父, Ip Chun葉準,  has created the Noih Laap Sáu 內擸手 – Inside Laap Sáu. This is the exciting part of Wing Chun. However, no matter what kind of hands we create, we must follow the Wing Chun principles. But how does this relate to the leg techniques?
