Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 335

24 Leg Techniques – Part 3

1 Dāng Geuk 蹬脚

Grandmaster Tse performs Dāng Geuk 蹬脚

Dāng 蹬 means to extend the arm or the leg with force. Geuk 脚 means leg. Therefore, Dāng Geuk 蹬脚 means to extend the leg with force, so of course, this is a kick. Dāng Geuk is a front kick where we lift up the leg with the knee bent and then straighten the leg with speed and power. We keep the toes up and strike with the heel. Dāng Geuk is the most powerful Wing Chun kick, and it is like the Wing Chun punch, when you see the target, hit it, or in this case kick it. Wing Chun kicks are always lower than the waist because kicking too high makes it easy for you to lose your balance and expose yourself, so you can be attacked. If your opponent kicked your standing leg or run into you then you will lose your balance. Kicking lower is safer, particularly when you are at close distance. Dāng Geuk is usually used to kick the knee, hip, groin, or stomach, but of course, we can kick any part so long as it is a low kick. We can also use it in combination with our hands, so you could use Tāan Sáu 攤手 to block their punch and then use Dāng Geuk to kick their front knee. You can use  Laap Sáu 擸手 after contacting with Tāan Sáu to pull the opponent’s arm down and then kick their knee, or standing leg, stomach, hip or waist. We must remember, when we use Dāng Geuk we must not move our upper body, or else the opponent will see it coming.
