Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 358

Twenty-Four Leg Techniques Part 26

Páak Geuk 拍脚 is like Páak Sáu 拍手 – Slapping Hand, and so Páak Geuk is Slapping Leg. If our opponent throws a straight punch at us we can use Páak Sáu to slap it away. It is the same idea with Páak Geuk only when they kick at us. Usually, we use it against low kicks, like in Chī Geuk 黐腳 – Sticking Leg. When they kick at us, we slap it away with. In Páak Sáu we use the palm to slap, and in Páak Geuk we use the sole of the foot. Obviously, we slap from the outside to the inside and so this requires good timing and good accuracy. If our Páak Geuk misses, then we will be in trouble as the opponent will be able to kick us, but if we can slap their kick away, then they will lose their balance and then we could follow up with Dāng Geuk 蹬脚 to kick their body or their standing leg. Therefore, we need to practise Páak Geuk a lot in order to get it right.

Another way to use Páak Geuk is for attacking, similar to way as we use Dāng Geuk, only we are kicking sideways. The direction we kick is opposite to Jāk Geuk 側脚 – Side Kick. In Jāk Geuk we kick out to the side – away from our standing leg. With Páak Geuk we kick in – towards the standing leg. So, if the opponent is standing close and to the side of us, we do not want to move much, then we can use Páak Geuk to kick them from close range.
