Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 386

Kūng Fū 功夫 – Part 10

Wing Chun Kicking

Of all the skills I have learnt, Wing Chun Kyùhn 詠春拳 is my main fighting skill, then comes Tàijíquán太極拳. This I find very natural when applying fighting skills. Actually do not fight, I only practise Chī Sáu 黐手 with my students in every Wing Chun lesson and Tuī Shǒu 推手 with my students in every Tàijíquán lesson. Through practising with them I have come to understand the fighting skills. Of course, these skills have come from my teachers Great Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 and Great Grandmaster Chén Xiǎo Wàng 陳小旺.

In the beginning, when I was teaching Wing Chun, I would always Chī Sáu with my students, most of them were bigger and stronger than me and I had to use the Wing Chun skill to fight with them. Each lesson was like fighting as they all wanted to test me, particularly the beginners. When I started teaching I was only 28 . So even though I thought I do not fight with other people, in class it was always challenging. This is how I learnt. My Sīfú 師父, Ip Chun, would Chī Sáu with any student, it did not matter if it was in class or in a seminar, whether their Wing Chun skill was good or bad. When we Chī Sáu, we cannot hide, because if we are not good enough, we can get hit as nothing is fixed. We have to be good, so although Chī Sáu is not fighting, sometimes it can be very close to it.
