Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 400

Three Forms – Part 10

We have talked about using the elbows, shoulder, head, chest, back and hip to strike, when we are at close distance. If we are further away, we can use the palm and fist, and there are many ways to use them. We also have the Sāam Jīm Kyùhn 三尖拳 – Three Sharps Fist, where we use the knuckle of the index finger. So, in Wing Chun there are many ways to use our palms and fists. When we are further away with the opponent, we can use our fingers like Biu Zi and close enough we can use fist, again we have many ways to use fist with the index finger’s knuckle stick out, not just the index finger’s knuckle, we can use the middle finger’s knuckle as well. If we lose contact with the opponent, we can use the Mahn Sáu 問手 – Asking Hand, that chops from the bottom up, which the opponent will not expect and is hard to defend against. Then we can contact their hand then we can go back to feeling the opponent’s energy and so defeat them. This is the Wing Chun style of fighting, we use the contact to feel the opponent’s energy and use it against them. This way we do not need to use more energy than we need. So Chī Sáu 黐手 – Sticking Hands training is the most important part of Wing Chun.
