Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 401

Three Forms – Part 11

Wing Chun’s three forms cover different aspect of training.  Síu Lihm Tào 小念頭 is for Gūng Lihk 功力. Tsum Kìuh 尋橋 is for footwork and Bīu Zī 標指 is for distance. In fighting we need power, which is for Gūng Lihk, we need footwork which we train in Tsum Kìuh. If we train well, we can already fight and can be very good if we have good skill and our Chī Sáu 黐手 – Sticking Hands is good. Then Bīu Zī is a more advanced level. This is because it teaches us more ways to fight, at different distances and even without contact. So is we keep developing these forms, build good Gūng Lihk, good footwork and good distance fighting, then the next step is the wooden dummy, and this teaches us to use our arms and our legs together. Wing Chun teaches us how a weaker person can overcome a stronger person, so we need to be able to use our arms and legs at the same time. The big, strong person will rely on one punch, then another punch and another punch, one after another. Wing Chun will use two arms and two legs together and closer, one after another in a shorter time, we will also use contact so we use less energy and continue to strike. This is Wing Chun’s advantage and is what has made Wing Chun so popular around the world.
