Grandmaster Tse’s Wing Chun Note 411

How do you Handle Someone Stronger than you In Chī Sáu 黐手? – Part 1

Grandmaster Tse and his teacher, Great Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準

Students often ask me, “How can we handle someone stronger than us during Chī Sáu 黐手?” The person who asks this is usually junior. Seniors never ask me this question. Do you know why? When you become senior you will know the answer. Wing Chun is a very intelligent skill and teaches us a lot of wisdom. There are also a lot of spiritual practises and religions that teach us wisdom too. Wisdom cannot be developed by just reading books. It takes a lot of practise and the body and mind must be together. In Wing Chun, when we Chī Sáu, the mind and the body must come together as we cannot think of anything else when we are doing Chī Sáu. Also our body cannot do anything that does not match what the minds wants.  So, they have to be together. At the same time, we forget everything else and focus on the Chī Sáu. This is mind and body completely together and then the wisdom will start to develop. Juniors cannot handle a strong opponent as first they do not have enough Gūng Lihk 功力, second they do not have enough sensitivity, and third they do not have enough skill. Seniors have enough Gūng Lihk, sensitivity and skill and this makes all the difference.
