Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note #200

When We Hit Them, They Hit Back

Wing Chun Class in Notting Hill GateIn Chī Sáu 黐手 it is common to come across the situation where you hit your opponent but they still hit you back. When this happens to you, you feel that it is not fair. Yes, you are right, it is not fair because you are not really hitting your opponent and trying to hurt them and because they do not feel any pain or lose their balance they can still hit you back. In reality if you were to really hit them they would feel pain, they might even lose their balance, they might stagger backwards a long distance or even collapse and so if it were real they would not be able to hit you back.

However, when we are doing Chī Sáu we need to think about this. On one hand you do not want to hurt your partner because if you do they will not want to train with you next time, but on the other hand you do not want them to ignore your strike. So we have to be more skilful which means we should be able to cover their other hand so when you hit them they cannot hit you back. This is the best skill. We should always consider that the opponent will try to hit back so we must learn good techniques which will cover this. Once we know all these good skills we need to practice them a lot in order to maintain them.
