Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note 228
Examination by Grandmaster Ip Chun Part 4

After they had finished their demonstration, they all gathered around listen to Grandmaster Ip Chun’s 葉準 comments. He said, “The most important part of Tsum Kìuh 尋橋 is footwork, specifically Jyún Máh 轉馬. Wing Chun Kung Fu teaches us how to use less energy in order to overcome strong energy (using soft to defeat hard 以柔制剛).” He then told his eldest son to punch him. Grandmaster used a Faak Sáu ?手 together with Jyún Máh to block his son’s punch. He then explained, “If I block his hand without using Jyún Máh then this is hand against hand and the strong one will win so of course more or less it will be him, but if I block it and use Jyún Máh as well then I can release some of his power and so I can defend against this punch, this is all because of using Jyún Máh. so you must all practise Jyún Máh, spend more time doing it and then your Tsum Kìuh will be better.” at the end of this explanation all the students of the Tsum Kìuh were happy.
The next group of students to come forwards were to demonstrate their Bīu Zī. This was a smaller group. It is normal that the first, Siu Lim Tao 小念頭 group is big. The next group, the Tsum Kìuh 尋橋 group is a bit smaller and the Bīu Zī 標指 group is the smallest. This shows us that consistency is very important. Many people today are easily excited at first but they also very easily give up.
