Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note 243

Ng Mui Si Tai 五枚師太 – Part 12

Yìhm Wing Chun 嚴詠春 practised day and night. First she stood, in order to develop her Gūng Lihk 功力 and footwork. Second, she practised all the forms, eventually learning Siu Lim Tao 小念頭, Tsum Kìuh 尋橋and Bīu Zī 標指.  Third she recited all the poems relating to Chinese Medicine, acupuncture points and Kung Fu, even though she did not understand all the meanings. She knew she needed to remember them and knew that her Sīfú 師 父 would teach her eventually. Besides, she was more worried about the fight with the Gang leader in a few months time.

She also needed to practise the Wooden Dummy (Muhk Yàhn Jōng 木人樁) techniques. Ng Mui Si Tai 五枚師太 made 7 extra wooden dummies and placed them around Wing Chun. Wing Chun then had to fight all of them which was this was much more advanced than just facing one. She had to use her fingers, her fists, her palms, chops and kicks. She trained very hard because Ng Mui Si Tai wanted her to be able to break the branches of a tree with all these striking techniques. Being able to do this was all based on her Gūng Lihk 功力together with together with training her bones and skin. Chī Sáu 黐手was the main part of training, this was because if her Chī Sáu was good then she could use less energy and know the position, which would enable her to know the joints and the weak areas of the body, like the head, neck, centre of gravity etc. Then with just one strike she could finish her opponent, but she learnt to always strike three or four times once she had caught right position.
