2019 Grandmaster Ip Chun Seminar Part 1

In September 2019 I took 40 students to Loucun 羅村 in Foshan 佛山 to attend a seminar with my Sīfú 師父, Ip Chun 葉準, who had just celebrated his 95^th Birthday with a big dinner party in Hong Kong. Our seminar was on the 21 September which was the day after we arrived in China. We started at 10am and everyone was sat down when Sīfú came in. Everyone gave him a very big welcome, for many of them it was the first time they had seen him but for all of us he, and his father Ip Man 葉問, are our heroes.

To begin with Sīfú said, “I have not been in the UK for 20 years. Before that, I came over every year. I would like to Chī Sáu 黐手 with Darryl and Michael (that meant my student Darryl Moy and myself) to see what standard you are up to.” This was very exciting for everyone. Not many of them had seen his Chī Sáu live, for us it was like a test. Then Darryl did Chī Sáu with his Sīgōng 師公. After about three minutes Darryl grew tired and Sīfú hit him. Then it was my turn. We also Chī Sáu for about three minutes. Sīfú did not hit me, but he could have. I was tired. He was amazing. Then he asked us all to sit down and said, “Now I know your standard.”
