Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note 267

Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 Seminar Part 7

Grandmaster Ip Chun 葉準 using Fāt Sáu 拂手

The next person to ask Grandmaster Ip Chun葉準 a question was Radu. He said, “Sigong, I want to ask you about when you are defending with your Fāt Sáu 拂手, is your energy coming from your hand or your legs?” Grandmaster Ip Chun smiled and answered, “Everyone can see me defending myself using Fāt Sáu, but most of you only look at my hands and do not see my whole body. If you look clearly, you will see that I am using my legs. I am actually using Jyún Máh轉馬 to bring my Fāt Sáu out to meet my opponent’s attack. Actually, all Wing Chun hand techniques come from the stance. The hands move a lot and so most people think it is just hand movements, but they all come from the footwork and the stance.” Now everyone was happy because this was what they had all been studying and their Sigong/Tai Sigong had just confirmed it, that stance and footwork is more important than the hand technique.
