Master Tse’s Wing Chun Note 271

Chī Sáu 黐手 with Beginners pt1

Master Tse does Chī Sáu 黐手 with a junior student

It is a lot of fun practising Chī Sáu 黐手 with beginners, this is because they do not how to use their energy well and so will use too much. This makes it more like fighting. Senior students are used to practising with opponents who know how to do Chī Sáu and so are more careful. They will basically read their opponent’s energy first and find out whether they can attack, and when they do attack they will also defend themselves for example, like maintaining their Wu Sáu at the centre in front of their chest. This is case they miss and their Wu Sáu can protect them, it is like having insurance. Also if the opponent counter attacks their Wu Sáu can be used to defend as well.

Beginners on the other hand only think about attacking and do not think about defending themselves very much. They will go as quickly as they can, use more energy and not hold back when they attack. If the senior is not careful they beginner can hit them. Even when the senior attacks, the beginner will respond very strongly and so the senior will find it difficult to handle them. Therefore doing Chī Sáu with beginners is challenging.
